How we work

We try to keep everything as simple as possible: when you get in touch with us, we will discuss your work and your ambitions and then assign you the personal writer, editor or tutor who best fits your needs.

This page is under constant review and will be regularly updated, but, in the meantime, if you have a query and it is not covered by the FAQs below, or our Terms and Conditions, please just ask us.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I submit my copy to WriteStars? You can send it to us by email, by disc or through the post. Always keep a copy yourself, as we can’t be responsible for any work that may be lost in the mail. Remember the author Jilly Cooper, who left the only copy of the first draft of her blockbusting novel Riders on a number 22 bus ... doesn’t bear thinking about.

How do I pay? By cheque, PayPal or, with prior agreement, direct into our bank account. We do ask for payment in advance, and cheques must clear before we start work.

How is the price calculated? We tailor our fee to each project, according to how much work is involved. Prices may vary with different editors/writers/mentors/tutors within WriteStars. To help our clients budget, we offer our Flying Edits, and a service where you can buy our time by the hour, or in 20-minute blocks (see below). With larger editing projects, we may divide the fee so it can be paid in instalments, as each stage of the work is completed.

Can I talk to my editor? You can usually book a telephone appointment with us – at a price to be agreed beforehand, for blocks of 20 minutes, paid in advance.

What if I have a complaint? We hope you never will. But if you’re not happy with an editor, or with our service, just let us know and we’ll do our best to sort things out.

Are my ideas safe? We ask all our editors to sign a letter of agreement which includes a clause on confidentiality. You retain all rights, unless otherwise agreed beforehand.

I can’t type. Will you accept a handwritten manuscript? Yes, as long as its legible. However, we will need to get it typed up if we are to edit it for you, and there will be a fee for this. We will let you know the fee in advance and you can decide if you want to go ahead.

Do I have to pay if you have to print out my work? Yes, please. But we only charge 4p a sheet to cover paper and ink costs, much less than some other editing sites.

If there is anything else you would like to know, please get in touch.
